What is a Slavic Doll?
Slavic doll is a traditional textile craft with a history of approximately one thousand years, playing a vital role in the life of Slavic people.
Slavic dolls vary in their making and purposes. They can be used as toys for children, placed in homes for blessings and protection, and are also commonly used in various rituals and celebrations. Nowadays, traces of Slavic dolls are rarely seen in Russian cities, only found in certain areas that continue to preserve traditional culture, making them a precious cultural asset.
During this event, we will craft the herbal doll, Кукла "Кубышка – травница," which is filled with an assortment of natural herbs traditionally believed to confer blessings and enhance health.
About the Workshop
This course will demonstrate a special Slavic traditional binding technique, teaching participants how to create most of the doll’s body without using needles or scissors. The herbal doll in Slavic tradition, is particularly unique, with its body packed with a variety of aromatic herbs. Not only are these dolls cute, but they also emit a captivating scent. Ancient Slavs believed that these dolls could protect one's health! At the end of the course, each participant will have crafted their own Slavic doll.
